Kenyan Paraplegic Organisation

This programme is the voice of the paraplegics in that it endeavors to assist the society to identify, reduce and eliminate all barriers that could hinder the participation of paraplegics in governance and policy. We have consistently taken a visible role in lobbying policy makers and organizations to adopt paraplegics friendly manners either in the workplaces, social functions among others.

Tangible milestones have been registered in the following areas:

(i) Advocacy efforts in the Persons with Disabilities Act::
KPO played a pivotal role in lobbying the Government to enact the Persons with Disabilities Act. We have consistently organized debates on this Act more so in analyzing the gains or flaws in its implementation.

(ii) Legal Aid/Redress project::
Most of the persons living with spinal cord injuries (60% being accident victims) suffer under the yoke of prolonged court battles and hence lack of compensation. Others suffered labour issues under the shackles of inhuman working environments. It was against this background that this project was initiated early year 2006 in partnership with Kituo cha Sheria. Under this project, our members get legal aid and at times representation. Recently we organized a legal aid clinic at the National spinal Injury Hospital.
