REHABILITATION AND TRAUMA CENTRE INFORMATION:

The Kenyan Paraplegic Organization is currently executing a massive fundraising campaign towards the construction of a rehabilitation centre for people with spinal cord injury and victims of trauma. The campaign intends to marshal one million donors who will be requested to donate at least Ksh. 100 towards the kitty. We have already purchased 12 acres in Kiserian, Nairobi, a serene and tranquil place ideal for rehabilitation.

The Need for a Rehabilitation and Trauma Centre:

There are over 200 patients with spinal cord injuries in need of rehabilitation at any one time. Most of them wallow in despondency and hardly access these services.
Statistics indicate that 70 % of them die three years after leaving hospitals due to grave complications that befell them when they lack rehabilitation services.
Kenya and indeed East and Central Africa doesn’t have a standard Rehabilitation Centre.
Recent catastrophes in Kenya and the great lakes region have laid bare the enormous challenge of rehabilitation that victims go through-they have to contend with adhoc/emergency intervention strategies that leaves no room for follow ups.
One unspoken and shocking fact is that it costs at least 15-20 million to rehabilitate one Kenyan victim of spinal cord injury and trauma in rehabilitation centres outside the country-yet every year, scores of desperate victims end up paying this much-costs that fell on the weary shoulders of families, companies, insurance firms among others-the cost of rehabilitating seven Kenyans in Europe is enough to construct this centre in the country.
There are so many vocational skills that people with spinal cord injuries and trauma victims can learn in a Rehabilitation Centre-most of them hardly get this chance.
Spinal cord injuries and trauma leaves a trail of psychological, emotional and social scars that can only be healed through sustained counselling sessions, unfortunately, scores of victims hardly get these services.
